Boekverslag: Nineteen Eighty-Four
1984 or Nineteen Eighty-four - George Orwell (1949)
Summary:
It is 1984 and the world is divided into three super states, which are constantly at war with one another. The people are living in a totally monitored world, where there is no freedom to do normal, daily activities without being watched through a telescreen, which is like a television, only the people you see can hear you and you can talk to them. They see everything that everyone does all the time, and if they see something that they think is wrong, they report the action and the person to the higher members of the Party, which is the governing organisation of the world. Everyone who is not a Prole, someone different from others because of their way of thinking, is a member of the Party. Everyone works for the Party, even the children who are taught to watch everyone else to make sure that they are not doing anything against the Party. Most people have been totally conditioned to love the leader of the Party, Big Brother, who may not even exist, and to do the jobs that are assigned to them. But there are still those who remember that there was a time when the world was different. They are the confused and the paranoid, the doubtful. They are people like Winston Smith; those who commit ?thought crimes? daily because they know that there was once a better world.
Winston Smith lives alone in London, Oceania, in a small apartment . He remembers a world that was much different before the Revolution of the Party. He remembers freedom, and people who supposedly do not exist anymore. He remembers his mother, and things which happened in the world before history was changed. He knows that there really was more because he is a History Changer for the Party, and he has seen things change from the truth to lies in sometimes less than one day. Because he cannot be sure what to believe any longer, he starts to write a journal from an old diary that he has purchased on the black market. But he has to be careful because if the Party found out that he was recording the things that happen in the world as they truly happen, he would be arrested for Thought crimes and conditioned (punished) by the Party. Right now, he does not think that anyone suspects him of thinking differently from anyone else because he pretends to love working for the Party. He keeps the diary and a pen in an alcove of his apartment, the only place where it cannot be seen by the telescreen. He even keeps a small scrap of paper on top on the book so he will know if someone has touched it.
Winston wants to know if there are others like him, those who do not love the Party and are secretly against everything the Party stands for. He sees the people at his work everyday, and thinks that it may be possible to pick among them at least one who is on his side. But this will be a difficult task and there is no real safe way to go about this without risking being found out by the Thought Police. He sees a girl, Julia, who works in a department that produces cheap pornography for the Proles. He thinks she must be a strong and active member of the women?s movement. He even thinks that she suspects him, but she meets him in the hallway at work one day, and falls in front of him. As he is helping her up, she slips a piece of paper into his hand. When Winston finally reads it, it says, ?I love you.? Now he knows that she is on his side and he plans to meet her soon. They go to a wood where they think there will be no telescreens, and they make love. Winston falls in love with Julia, who is much younger than he is, and they meet again and again when they think that it is safe. Winston even rents a room from a shopkeeper in town whom he thinks he can trust so that he and Julia will have a place to make love and to be themselves.
Winston thinks that there must be others like Julia, those who act as though they are happy to be working for the Party, but really are not. He notices a man at the Records Department where he works whom he knows as O?Brien and who seems as though he may be against the Party. He meets with him, and surely, he is just that. He invites Winston and Julia to come to his home and there he gives them a book that is supposedly about the Brotherhood, an underground association that may or may not exist which is against the Party and Big Brother. Winston and Julia read this book later in their hideaway, but it bores Julia and she falls asleep. She awakens and goes to the window where she listens to an old lady Prole singing while she is putting clothes on the line. Winston is also awake, and they are both naked. Suddenly, a picture falls off the wall, revealing a telescreen, and men in the Party?s uniforms storm into the room, along with the shopkeeper whom they thought could have nothing to do with the Party. Winston and Julia are arrested and separated. This is the last time that they will see each other while being free.
Winston is taken to The Ministry of Love, a large building solely for the purpose of punishment of traitors to the Party, and he is put into a room with very bright light, and occasionally beaten. There is a telescreen there telling him what to do all the time and he is starved. He never knows what time of the day it is, and he is unconscious for a large portion of time. Finally, after some time of beatings and starvation, he is taken to see one of the leaders of the Ministry of Love. It is none other than O?Brien. O?Brien talks to him in a civilised manner, but Winston is strapped to a table and electrically shocked each time he does not give the answers to O?Brien?s questions that he wants. After some time, Winston is conditioned and confused into believing that the Party is morally correct in the things that it does, and that everything that the Party says is true, that there was no real truth before the Party existed. But Winston still does not love Big Brother. Because of this, he is taken to room 101 where the ultimate torture is put before him. It is the only thing that he cannot bear, rats, and he cannot endure it, so he commits the final act, betrayal of Julia, by saying that he would rather that this happen to her. He is then released.
Some months later while sitting in a cafe drinking Victory gin, he is watching the telescreen and the Two Minutes Hate begins. While the campaign slogans are being shouted from the screen, he realises that he really does love Big Brother.
Author:
Eric Arthur Blair (George Orwell) was born in Motihari, India on June 25, 1903. He was educated at Eton College in England and there he wrote articles for the college magazines. He served with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma from 1922 to 1927. His first published article was in Le Monde in 1928 while he was living in Paris. Orwell hated totalitarianism and in 1936 he joined the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War, and was wounded. Later, when the Communists attempted to eliminate their allies on the far left, Orwell fought against them and was forced to flee Spain for his life. During the Second World War, Orwell wrote a weekly radio commentary, designed to counter German and Japanese propaganda. He died in England in 1950 of tuberculosis.
Orwell was a socialist but detested extreme political viewpoints. His most successful publications, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-four are meant to be warnings against totalitarian regimes and dictatorships.
Characters:
Winston Smith:
A thirty-nine-year-old man, who works as a history changer for the Party, but has his own ideas about society. He wants to know as much about society as he possibly can before the revolution started, but there is no safe way to do this without being caught by the Thought Police. He starts a diary of his own in a place in his apartment where the telescreens cannot see him to remind himself of the present things that happen, so his mind cannot be changed to think that those things really did not happen. He falls in love with a younger girl named Julia whom he thinks to be a member of the Party but is really on the same side as he. He is with her for a short time until they are found out. Winston is tortured and finally betrays Julia, and is programmed to love Big Brother.
Julia:
A twenty-six-year-old woman who works for the Pornography department of the Party, producing pornography for the Proles. She makes the Party think that she is really on their side when she is not. She hates the Party and wants to rebel against them and join the Brotherhood. She protests against the Party by having affairs with Party members who are supposed to be promoting abstinence. She falls in love with Winston and sneaks away with him every chance she gets. There is a difference between her strategy against the Party and Winston?s, though: she uses physical rebellion, and he uses emotional and intellectual rebellion. She ultimately betrays Winston and, like Winston, learns, through all the torture she has undergone, to love Big Brother.
O'Brien:
He works in the same building as Winston and Julia. He pretends to be against the Party in order to lure Julia and Winston into his trap of making them love Big Brother. He makes Winston and Julia believe that he is a secret member of the underground Brotherhood, but is really a spy for the Thought Police.
Themes:
Orwell shows that no matter what happens, democracy can be destroyed, and that the dominance of any ideology will result in totalitarianism, which means the enslavement and dehumanisation of man. Orwell's main theme is how precious and fragile human freedom really is.
The genre:
This book contains aspects of the social novel and the theme novel, such as the love story and the future novel. The future romance allows the writer to analyse, to criticise and to condemn structure, systems and tendencies, at the same time pretending to be writing about an imaginary world.
The year the story is set in is 1984. It may well have been a date in the future that Orwell got simply by turning the last two numbers of the year the book was wrote in around. But it was not so far in the future that Orwell could not show that the threats to freedom were real and that the dangers of a collapse of democracy were imminent.
The language used in this book is modern and not of a difficult nature, and there are dialogues included in many places which makes the book interesting to read. But there are many themes within the novel that may be difficult for younger readers to grasp. There are also many words invented by the Party in the book to replace words that were used before the Party came to power that may be difficult to keep track of as the book progresses.
The book is divided into three parts, which are then divided into smaller chapters. The language of Newspeak used within the text is explained at the end of the book.
Perspective:
Third person omniscient.
Time:
The story takes place in the future, in the year 1984. It spans one year and, besides from a few examples that refer to the past, it is told in chronological order.
Twentieth century - second part.
Setting:
The story takes place in the future in London, now the capital of Airstrip One, the name for England since it became part of Oceania, one of the three states into which the earth has been divided. The other states are Eurasia and Eastasia.

We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness?
Thema's:

We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness?
Thema's:
